Reflection as reported by War Victim Women and Girls (WVWG)
Since the start of the war in Tigray (Oct.2021), the humanitarian conditions of IDPs and host communities have been at an alarming stage. For several months people have been denied of accessing any kind of social service. The war resulted, among other things, a large number of raped, tortured and mass killings.
A woman from a village of sheraro explained her bad memories of sexual violence by saying
"… A group of militant told me and forcefully ordered to sleep with them, I was devastated. I threw away the market kiosk key and the house key right there in the harbor, realizing that they served no more purpose. All I could do was cry. "
According to the MSF report, the sexual violence victims has raised to over 800 women and girls in Mekelle only. Psychosocial problems have been the usual manifestation of most war survivors.
"Our neighbor came and told us that the army was going to attack us, so we ran into the forest. But they surrounded the forest in every direction and caught us. There were some children playing, including my sister’s sons. The army shot them on the spot and then raped them one by one in front of their relatives."

In general, the above survivors lived experience is an eye drop from an ocean. The combination of an unstable family environment, poverty, a high level of physical and sexual violence placed these victims in a very vulnerable position. Thus, Tigray Youth Empowerment Solutions (TYES) believe that the situation can be reversed by empowering the WVWG through psychosocial support, life skill, vocational and entrepreneurial skills trainings.
